Why Take the Electrical Apprentice Test?
Earning a passing grade on the electrical apprentice aptitude test is required to become an electrical apprentice.
Electrical apprenticeships give you the real-world skills that employers are looking for (or may even require) in candidates. Completing an apprenticeship through an employer can often lead right into your first full-time job. While working and studying in an apprenticeship program, you will learn:
- How to perform complex wiring installations
- Safety and repair surrounding electrical applications
- Theories behind electronics and circuitry
- Practical hands-on skills concerning the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical switches, connections, terminals, conductors, wiring, and more
Preparing for the Test
The electrical test contains a section on algebra and algebraic equations, and a section on reading comprehension. The mathematical portion of the exam will have four different kinds of algebraic equations, including:
- Linear equations
- Algebraic expressions
- Quadratic equations
- Relationship math and related functions
The reading comprehension portion will require you to read a text, then answer questions regarding the text. It will assess your ability to take in written information and understand it within a short time frame.
There will be no penalty for guessing during any part of the test, and the test is multiple choice. Make sure that you answer all of the questions and use your time wisely.
In most cases when taking electrical exams, a qualifying score means earning at least a 4 out of 9. If you do not pass your first time, you may retake the test after a certain period of time passes.
If you pass, there will likely be a follow-up interview that will be similar to a regular job interview, as most apprenticeships are paid positions. The interview will allow you to demonstrate your character traits and attitude, your work history, and your education and experience, with a potential employer.
Importance of Taking the Electrical Apprentice Test
Schools and employers require a passing score on the test — they want to know you have the knowledge necessary to begin the apprenticeship. You will be trained for a specific craft and can become licensed after completing the apprenticeship program.
There are many different kinds of electrical apprenticeship programs available, such as Inside Electrical, Limited Residential, and Limited Commercial. All of these programs require a passing grade on the exam.
It is recommended that you prepare for the exam by taking one or more practice tests beforehand. But with careful preparation, you should have little trouble passing the test before starting your paid apprenticeship!
